Honorable Mention
Nauru
Autumn

I do not know what it is that draws me here;
Her story is no different from that of countless others.
They are all fleeing death, only to reach this end.

Entire lifesavings dissolve into dark waves of ocean.
That leaky boat, it sways mockingly even as
Water seeps in like cheap blood.

I can see this in my mind, and now, before me
Please, her eyes whisper.

They’ve pushed her in now,
and her fingers are deathly white
through the checkered wire.

She has reached her destination:
a land of opportunity and Freedom

The word slips bitterly off my tongue
and into the pitching seas.

It beckons treacherously for more to follow suit.
